Patient Transport

Intubated patients should have mechanical ventilators for transport. Anesthetized and critically ill patients cannot regulate their own body temperature, leaving them at risk for hyperthermia. ETTs, urinary catheters, IV lines, chest tubes, and arterial lines are at risk for being pulled out when moving a patient from one bed to another. Transport ventilators typically consume about the same amount of oxygen as manual ventilation. Invasive arterial line to continuously monitor a patient's blood pressure is typically used only for critically ill patients.
